Here in Toronto the sun is out & the weather is quite pleasant--for a change... Even though Arlene Williams & I did our knitting with Gr. 2s some time ago, here is the pattern for the finger puppets that we made with the class. This pattern owes much to Jean Greenhowe, knit toymaker supreme; I saw a doll in her patternbook that gave me the ideas for these puppets. Worsted Weight Yarn & 3mm needles 9 yds. MC for skirt/pants scraps for contrast: hair, skin Body: CO 8 sts. loosely in MC. Note that 1st row is the RS of work. 1st Row: Inc K-wise into every st. [16 sts] Beg. with a P row, st. st for 6 rows 7th Row: (K2, K2tog) --- to end [12 sts] Break this MC yarn. Join CC #1 [skin colour] Beg. with a K row, continue in st. st for 8 rows. Break off CC#1. Join CC#2 [hair colour] Cont in g.st for 2 rows; then 1 row st. st. Next row: (P2tog) to end. [6 sts] Bind off & tie tightly. Join row ends & turn right side out. This seam will be the Centre Back of puppet. Hair: add hair for braids, pony tail or shaggy style. Use a cr*ch*t hook for this. Arms: Using CC #1, CO 6 sts. St. st 15 rows, then CO. Gather up the CO sts. & tightly fasten off. Rep. other side. Allow strip to roll lengthwise, sew together. To insert arms: [This is fiddley BUT it really works !] Push knitting needle through body between knitted sts. from one side to the other, 2 rows above introduction of CC #1. Now widen the hole by pushing a pencil or ball-point pen through. Attach sewing needle to arms, leaving a length of yarn to pull on. Pass the needle through the hole in the body & pull the yarn ends to draw the arms piece through the body. Remove the length of yarn & adjust the arms. Face: Draw features with a fine tipped marker or embroider if desired. Height of finished puppet is 3". I made a not too successful 'boy' because pants are difficult. The girl was fine. The best was a clown with a multi-coloured suit, a pointed hat & a removable ruffle around his neck. The hat was just decreasing the sts for the head to a point & the ruffle was to CO 8 sts. inc in every one/every row until the size was in proportion to the body, 2 or 3 rows, tie on with remains of cast on/off. These puppets fit adult fingers too. [ DD#2's SO really liked Clowney ] Now it's back to reading the KL Digests, enjoying the weather & of course, KNITTING.
