Make 11 diamonds using double knitting/worsted, size roughly 4 mm [8 or US size 6] needles as follows: Cast on 2 stitches. Work in garter stitch (every row knit), increasing 1 stitch at each end of 3rd and every following 4th row until there are 60 stitches. Work one row.** Now change colour, if you want, you don't have to, and knit 2 rows. Continue in garter stitch, decreasing on stitch at each end of next and every following 4th row until 2 stitches remain, cast/bind off. Now make 5 triangles, by working to ** and then leaving stitches on a length of wool. Now make 2 triangles on the same principles as above, but increasing/decreasing at one edge only, so that you go up to only 30 stitches, and have a long, thin triangle or half-diamond, with a straight edge. Now sew up as in diagram: __ |\ /\ /\d /\ /\ /| |a\/ b\/ c\/ e\/ f\/g| | /\ /\ /\ /\ /\ | |/ h\/ i\/_j\/ k\/ l\| \ /\ /\ x/\ /\ / \/ \/ m\/ n\/ \/ /\ /\ /\ /_o\/_p\/_q\ (x is left empty for the neck; j is a triangle, not a diamond) Now sew h to a and b; b to h and i; c to o; q to e; f to k and l and l to f and g. Pick up and knit 60 stitches round each cuff (a and g) and work 24 rows in k1 p1 rib (in stripes, if you like) - you can do this in the round, or before sewing up if you prefer. Cast/bind off in rib. Pick up stitches at flat end of j, and knit down the sides of m and n (about 60 stitches per side), including 1 stitch from top of p for centre of v-neck; work 12 rows in k1 p1 rib, decreasing on each row either side of central stitch. Cast/bind off in rib. Pick up the 240 stitches on wool at the bottoms of d, o, p and q and work 24 rows in k1, p1 rib, casting/binding off in rib. This isn't original, by the way; it was in "She" magazine about 15 years ago, and I made it in shetland for my sister; it was lovely, but it "grew". I don't know who originally designed it, as I no longer have the original pattern, but it's a good way of using up leftovers. -- Annabel Smyth Annabel@amsmyth.demon.co.uk ------------- --- This pattern downloaded from Wool Works: the online knitting compendium http://www.woolworks.org/
