DENISE'S SUNFLOWER CAP Size 6 US 16-inch circular needle 1 set Size 6 US double-pointed needles 1 skein green cotton 1 skein medium brown 1 skein bright yellow NOTE: I used Tahki Cotton Classic green, Bernat Handicrafter med. brown, and a unidentified yellow. All worked. Gauge = 5 to 5-1/2 sts per inch in st st (Tahki was 5-1/2) Size small (3 mo) and large (12 mo)-- guesstimating. Directions for large in (). With green yarn, cast on 80 (88) sts. Being careful not to twist, join, place marker and knit every row until cap measures 2-1/4 inches (2-1/2) inches) Begin flower petals -- Rows 1 & 2 - K7 green, join yellow and K1,*K7 green, K1 yellow; repeat from * around. Rows 3 & 4 - K1 yellow, *K5 green, K3 yellow; repeat from * around, ending row with K2 yellow Rows 5 & 6 - K2 yellow, *K3 green, K5 yellow; repeat from * around, ending row with K3 yellow Rows 7 & 8 - K3 yellow, *K1 green, K7 yellow; repeat from * around, ending row with K4 yellow NOTE: For more pointed petals, repeat Rows 7 & 8 Using yellow only, continue to knit sunflower petals -- K3, P1, *K7, P1; repeat from * around, ending row with K4. Continue until cap measures 4-1/2 inches from brim. Begin flower center and decreases -- (change to DP needles) Change to brown yarn, K one row, and continue in brown. K6, K2tog. Repeat to end of row. K5, K2tog. Repeat to end of row. K4, K2tog. Repeat to end of row. Continue until 6 stitches remain. Pull yarn through stitches and tie off securely. VARIATION -- For flower center, use yellow and brown alternating colors for sunflower "seeds".
